I have shown many horses in my lifetime, and they all have a very special place in my heart. My time showing Jammer will always remain among some of the most precious memories I have ever shared with an equine during my 20+ year show career. When Jammer entered the show ring, he became a totally different animal - he loved the applause of crowds, he loved the competition, and he loved to perform. He gave 110% , every single time, regardless of the circumstances.
Even after his accident in March 2007, in those first months when we were all trying to learn a new world together without his sight, Jammer still continued to give every ounce of his energy to doing what his handler needed him to do. When I decided to continue his Showmanship career when he could no longer see my visual cues, there was very little time to completely retrain him to feel pressure cues instead. He was so anxious to please, that he sometimes grew frustrated that he didn't always know what was being asked of him. Jammer and I spent many, many long hours at home, trying over and over to teach him to trust me enough to respond to pressure instead of sight. It was a very long road, but one definitely worth traveling.
Jammer winning both the Adult and Amateur Showmanship classes at the 2007 AMHA Eastern Championships will always be in a very special place in my heart. And when we finally got that final Country Pleasure Driving point at the AMHR World Championships in Columbus, OH, my heart literally soared for him.
What an amazing story to tell.... driving his final 17 points completely blind in one eye, giving 110% as usual.
Jammer has a permanent home with us. He continues to be an outstanding herd sire, a fantastic example of a miniature horse's heart, and a true inspiration to all that know him. We are excited about his new philanthropic schedule. :)
I am honored to have shown such a great and talented equine friend.
